Halo Therapy – Lung Health

LUNG HEALTH

We are faced with many challenges that restrict our ability to breathe;

Emphysema is a lung condition that causes shortness of breath. In people with emphysema, the air sacs in the lungs (alveoli) are damaged. Over time, the inner walls of the air sacs weaken and rupture — creating larger air spaces instead of many small ones.

Typically brought on by smoking, it is a known fact that quitting smoking is the only way to stop emphysema from progressing to more serious stages.

Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out and shortness of breath. For some people, asthma is a minor nuisance and for others it can be life threatening.

Bronchitis means swelling in your air passages (bronchi). Bronchi are the air passages that connect your windpipe (trachea) with tiny air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs. The air sacs are where your body absorbs the oxygen you breathe in.

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi. This inflammation means the walls of your bronchi are swollen and filled with extra sticky mucus. Airflow into and out of your lungs is partly blocked because of the swelling and extra mucus in your bronchi. This makes you cough.

Causes of COPD

Smoking is the number one cause of COPD.

Other causes include:

  • A rare genetic disorder called Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
  • Second-hand smoke
  • Air pollution (dust or chemicals)
  • Repeated lung infections during childhood
  • Severe asthma
  • Asthma combined with smoking

Answers to Your Questions

What is the recommendation to receiving salt therapy?

Each situation is different, from mild asthmatic conditions to advance COPD. This is something you may need to determine for yourself. The best way to begin is to receive weekly sessions for a period of 8 weeks to experience the benefits. From there you can determine the best course for you.

How long is each appointment?

This is dependent upon the size of the room. The salt booth, located in our Brimfield location requires only 20 minutes because of the confinement of the area to a small space. The generator is pushing out just as much salt dust as the generator of a room. Therefore, you are taking in so much more in a shorter amount of time.

The salt room session is typically 40-45 minutes, again due to the size of the room. Our room is approximately 120 square feet.

Are there other benefits to halo therapy?

Aside from the pure relaxation that happens from entering the room and lying down in our yogibo chairs (Boylston location), the salt is also therapeutic for skin conditions from acnes to psoriasis and rosecea as well as eczema.

What make a salt room therapeutic?

This is the most important question and when I ask people who have visited a salt room elsewhere if there was a generator blowing salt into the room they don’t seem to know the answer.

The halogenerator is the benefit of any salt experience. If there is no generator there is no benefit other than stress reduction in a pleasant environment.

Are salt lamps a good alternative to receiving halo therapy?

This is a myth that has been believed to be true as a result of false advertising. Salt lamps are pretty and add to the ambiance of a room yet they provide absolutely no therapeutic value other than the sweetness of a space.

Are there any contraindications to halo therapy?

If you can go to the beach and enjoy the ocean waters, you can attend halo therapy sessions.

Can children benefit from halo therapy?

Absolutely, particularly when they are suffering with ear infections, stuffy noses, and other cold related symptoms. The salt helps the body to expel the mucous from the lungs and nose.

What kind of salt is used in the generator?

We use medical grade fine salt which is then ground down to fine dust particles that are easily ingested into the nasal passages and lungs.
